User Evaluation Research: Interview 6

How old are you?
45

How often do you travel on planes?
At least once a week.

Do you consider yourself to be punctual? Or are you often running late?
Very punctual, punctuality defines character.

If you had to wait in an airport, would you use any built-in entertainment, or would you bring your own? Why?
I would bring my own. I can utilise my time far greater if I use my own laptop before my flight.

What do you think of when you hear airport entertainment?
I generally think of bars, lounges and cafes.

What is the most interesting piece of airport entertainment you have seen or heard of?
I don’t really look into it. I don’t like the time I spend in airports so I don’t really care.

Imagine a large scale, physical battleships game. Without any further explanation of the idea, how do you think it would work?
I think it would work like the small game of battleships. By name I associate it with the strategy game and I’d imagine in an airport context it would just be a large version of this, maybe with people using flights to certain destinations as their ‘turn’ as such to attain a certain target.

The game is designed to work with an actual pool and proper battleships in the water. What do you think of this idea? Do you see any issues with it?
I see issues in terms of practicality. That sort of idea is going to require large amounts of space to implement, often these things airports don’t have from my experience.

Would you play this particular game if it was in an airport? Why? Why not?
Absolutely not. I’m a professional, this is the reason why so many of my flights are late making me late for my meetings.

The game is played in two different areas of the terminal. You touch on your screen, and it attacks the battleships in the other person’s pool, and vice versa. What do you think of this control method? Do you think this would be engaging?
I don’t see any problem with it. Personally, I probably wouldn’t use it. I think it would be engaging but it’s going to be important that they aren’t placed in inconvenient places where people are going to block walkways while using it.

How do you imagine the control screen would work?
Just touch where you want to attack the other person’s ship. I can’t see how it could be more complex than that.

Now that you have a general overview of the whole concept, do you have any suggested improvement?

My idea for a battleship game would be to utilise the actual flights, and change the battleships game to a large scale game, whereby one must take a certain flight, or pass the game over to someone taking a certain flight to fulfil that turn. This would require more strategy, be more interesting and wouldn’t waste time for us professionals.

User Evaluation Research: Interview 5

How old are you?
31

How often do you travel on planes?
Rarely

Do you consider yourself to be punctual? Or are you often running late?
Punctual

If you had to wait in an airport, would you use any built-in entertainment, or would you bring your own? Why?
Probably both. I’ll usually have something to entertain the kids, but if it’s a long wait having something to watch would be good.

What do you think of when you hear airport entertainment?
Televisions, restaurants and bars

What is the most interesting piece of airport entertainment you have seen or heard of?
I’ve heard of a few airports with indoor children’s playgrounds which would be very handy.

Imagine a large scale, physical battleships game. Without any further explanation of the idea, how do you think it would work?
Like regular battleships but with people separated by a large, physical barrier. The playing area might be a painted section of floor space.

The game is designed to work with an actual pool and proper battleships in the water. What do you think of this idea? Do you see any issues with it?
Sounds like an interesting idea. If the game uses an actual pool it would require some maintenance.

Would you play this particular game if it was in an airport? Why? Why not?
Depends if it is child-friendly. If my children aren’t with me I’d probably give it a go just to see how it works.

The game is played in two different areas of the terminal. You touch on your screen, and it attacks the battleships in the other person’s pool, and vice versa. What do you think of this control method? Do you think this would be engaging?
If it’s really easy to use. I’m not too good with technology so if I can’t understand it when I first play it I’ll probably give up or get bored. I’d be happy to let my kids have a go if I needed to keep them entertained.

How do you imagine the control screen would work?
I assume it would be a large touch screen which explains the game as you go along.

Now that you have a general overview of the whole concept, do you have any suggested improvement?
My oldest 2 children both have smart phones so maybe being able to connect and play through other devices would make it more accessible.

User Evaluation Research: Interview 4

How old are you?

10

How often do you travel on planes?
Never

Do you consider yourself to be punctual? Or are you often running late?
I am very on time

If you had to wait in an airport, would you use any built-in entertainment, or would you bring your own? Why?
Not really, I think I’d just use my iPad to play Minecraft.

What do you think of when you hear airport entertainment?
Just anything fun to do.

What is the most interesting piece of airport entertainment you have seen or heard of?
I’ve never been on a plane before. I don’t know.

Imagine a large scale, physical battleships game. Without any further explanation of the idea, how do you think it would work?
One person is on one side and one person is on one side and they try beat each other by guessing where they are.

The game is designed to work with an actual pool and proper battleships in the water. What do you think of this idea? Do you see any issues with it?
Wow, that would be a lot of fun I think. I might get worried that my brother would push me in though.

Would you play this particular game if it was in an airport? Why? Why not?
I think it might be fun for some people, but I’m not really interested in battleships.

The game is played in two different areas of the terminal. You touch on your screen, and it attacks the battleships in the other person’s pool, and vice versa. What do you think of this control method? Do you think this would be engaging?
Yes. And I am good at using touch screens.

How do you imagine the control screen would work?
You touch it and you move things across the screen.

Now that you have a general overview of the whole concept, do you have any suggested improvement?
I think there should be pools where you can swim where the battleships are.

User Evaluation Research: Interview 1

How old are you?

16

How often do you travel on planes?

Once every two years

Do you consider yourself to be punctual? Or are you often running late?

Pretty punctual but not 100% of the time

If you had to wait in an airport, would you use any built-in entertainment, or would you bring your own? Why?

I would bring my own because mine is more curated to my taste.

What do you think of when you hear airport entertainment?

Cinema, technology. Movies, pretty much.

What is the most interesting piece of airport entertainment you have seen or heard of?

Don’t know, don’t care

Imagine a large scale, physical battleships game. Without any further explanation of the idea, how do you think it would work?

Teams. 3 on 3. 3 people choose where to hit at a time.

The game is designed to work with an actual pool and proper battleships in the water. What do you think of this idea? Do you see any issues with it?

I can’t really think of any issues or anything. I think it’d be expensive. Unnecessarily expensive. The scale just seems excessive.

Would you play this particular game if it was in an airport? Why? Why not?

Not if I had a choice.

The game is played in two different areas of the terminal. You touch on your screen, and it attacks the battleships in the other person’s pool, and vice versa. What do you think of this control method? Do you think this would be engaging?

I don’t know. I think it’s fine.

How do you imagine the control screen would work?

You press the screen where you want it to shoot and it shoots.

Now that you have a general overview of the whole concept, do you have any suggested improvement?

I've got nothing. Sounds good.

How old are you?
18

How often do you travel on planes?
In the past year I have travelled on two international flights, but other than that I use to travel often domestically.

Do you consider yourself to be punctual? Or are you often running late? I am punctual in general.

If you had to wait in an airport, would you use any built-in entertainment, or would you bring your own? Why
I would bring my own because it’s easy to use and I can continue using whatever device I have on the plane.

What do you think of when you hear airport entertainment?
Wifi.

What is the most interesting piece of airport entertainment you have seen or heard of?
Wifi, because I’m a social butterfly and I need internet all the time.

Imagine a large scale, physical battleships game. Without any further explanation of the idea, how do you think it would work?
A hologram device.

The game is designed to work with an actual pool and proper battleships in the water. What do you think of this idea? Do you see any issues with it?
I visualise people getting soaked. I can see getting wet becoming an issue.

Would you play this particular game if it was in an airport? Why? Why not?
I probably would, because the game battleships in general is fun. A large scale would improve gameplay and entertainment value.

The game is played in two different areas of the terminal. You touch on your screen, and it attacks the battleships in the other person’s pool, and vice versa. What do you think of this control method? Do you think this would be engaging?
I think this control method would be very engaging because users would be forced to pay more attention to their screen and what is going on in the game without their opponent opposite them.

How do you imagine the control screen would work?
I imagine the touch screen would be the size of an A4 piece of paper. The classic battleship grid would appear and there would be basic touch control. I imagine the screen would ask for confirmation before you send your next attack. I think there should also be a timer on the screen for each turn to make sure the game keeps a constant pace.

Now that you have a general overview of the whole concept, do you have any suggested improvement?
A webcam and mic to see and talk to your opponent would be ideal. Also animations on the touch screen when you hit or miss your opponent’s battleships.

How old are you?
19

How often do you travel on planes?
Only on rare family holidays.

Do you consider yourself to be punctual? Or are you often running late?
I hate running late, so I try to always leave early in case of traffic. I would rather be early than late.

If you had to wait in an airport, would you use any built-in entertainment, or would you bring your own? Why
Depending on my mood and what the built-in entertainment was. I feel that airports around the world do not offer much entertainment, so I would be interested in inspecting any new instalments. However, in the past I have only used my mobile phone or spoken to family members while waiting.

What do you think of when you hear airport entertainment?
I think of music and live bands on a stage (perhaps comedy acts) because I’m a musical person and enjoy live entertainment.

What is the most interesting piece of airport entertainment you have seen or heard of?
Travelators, I just love walking or running up and down them. I’m such a kid.

Imagine a large scale, physical battleships game. Without any further explanation of the idea, how do you think it would work?
A literal large version of battleships where you pick up and place your ships on a board/slot them in place. I would picture a big wall separating the users and maybe a window for you to see the user on the other end.

The game is designed to work with an actual pool and proper battleships in the water. What do you think of this idea? Do you see any issues with it?
I think the idea is entertaining and has potential to appeal to all ages. However, with a large body of water, I feel this would tempt young children to jump in. This would becoming an issue.

Would you play this particular game if it was in an airport? Why? Why not?
Yes, because it sounds appealing and I love water. I’m a competitive person and I personally love board games, so I think games on a large scale are a pretty sick idea.

The game is played in two different areas of the terminal. You touch on your screen, and it attacks the battleships in the other person’s pool, and vice versa. What do you think of this control method? Do you think this would be engaging?
I feel like it would be less engaging to be playing with someone who is on the other end of the terminal, somewhere you can’t see. If you wanted to play with a family member or a friend, how would you know where the other part of the game is? Also, I think not seeing or hearing your opponent would take away from the competitive and entertainment levels.

How do you imagine the control screen would work?
First of all I imagine that there would be a section on the screen that shows where you have placed your battleships, and that the location of your battleships would not actually appear in the water in front of you. I see there being a live camera above each battlefield so users on either end can view their opponent’s battlefield on their screen. Users would select their target by tapping on an area of the screen. When they hit a ship, they get to see a light illuminate in the other’s field and this would appear on their screen.

Now that you have a general overview of the whole concept, do you have any suggested improvement?
I suggest having a live stream camera so you can actually view your opponent (or alternatively not have the game split into two sections of the airport), add sound effects and some sort of 4d effect where you get sprayed with a mist of water when your battleships are hit.

Concept: Piano Visual Representation

Product Description

This product allows the user to literally see what they play on the piano in a form other than notes on a music score. It provides users and passengers alike to kill time while waiting for flights.

Notes will be represented on screen projection about 4 feet wide and at ceiling height. The keyboard itself will be positioned two feet from the projection wall and placed on a 4” high platform to cater for people of all heights. A ramp leading onto the platform will be made available so that it doesn’t exclude those with physical disabilities.

The notes, when played, will be represented on a volume-pitch graph. Loud and high pitched notes will be placed in the top right corner while softly played and low pitched notes will be placed in the bottom left corner. A vast array of creative possibilities are available at a key’s touch. From pictures made from chords to abstract lines made from arpeggios, the possibilities are endless.

Problem Statement

After spending extended periods of time waiting for flights, passengers tend to become bored or tired of the clinical environment of the terminal gate. Passengers need some kind of creative simuli to escape their stark surroundings.

Concrete Scenario

Passenger A, (24 y.o), arrives at the airport to find that her flight has been delayed for two hours and after an hour, he has run out of things to do and places to go. Having stumbled upon the visual piano representation, he spends a good 40 minutes on it and prepares to board his flight.

Research

In a recent survey to find what people would like the most in an airport terminal environment, the majority responded with music as their first choice, followed closely by physical activity

Concept: Cross-Terminal Battleship

Product Description

The product is designed to largely to entertain passengers waiting for flights (delayed or not) and to provide an interactive experience in the form of a game of Battleships with stations at two sides of the terminal. Users position their “ships” and send “missiles” to certain coordinates. Winning is achieved by destroying the opposing user’s ships i.e. picking all the right coordinates. This game has both a single and two player setting.

The “Board” will take form of a shallow (water is 0.2m deep) 5m x 3m pool with mini fountains where the coordinates are. These fountains shoot jets of water and act as “explosions” when the opposing player sends a “missile” to the specific coordinate.

The Dashboard allows the user to position their ships (represented on the board by rectangular laser lights from the ceiling) and to send missiles to the other user. Colour configurations are also available for the laser lights. A user is also able to send an invitation to play.

This product would be situated in various places in terminals. The minimum amount of stations around the airport is two to provide the multi-player experience. Parent supervision is required for children under 10 years.

Sketch

Problem Statement

Whether it’s arriving too early to a flight or having a flight delayed, waiting will always be an issue with passengers. Families with children and other passengers often find it difficult to entertain themselves and their children while waiting.

Concrete Scenario

Passenger A arrives at the terminal with 2 children, Passenger B arrives alone. Both arrive an hour and a half early to their flight and only 15 minutes in, the children begin to become agitated. Passenger A decides to entertain the children with a game of Battleships. Soon after, Passenger B sends an invitation to Passenger A’s from the other station and a game commences.
