Persona Interview 3

Persona 3, James Kidman
What is your age? 6.

How would you rate your problem solving skills? Sometimes I help my mum find things when she loses them...

Would you say that you are a patient person? No. My parents give me everything I want right away because they love me and want to spoil me. I never have to wait.

Are you a punctual person? My mum and dad like to get to places really early, so yeah.

How do you feel about airports? Love them or hate them? Airports are the coolest! I have been waiting forever to come to one. I really want to see the planes land and take off.

Do you fly frequently? No. I am about to fly for the first time!

What level income do you have? I’m 6... I do not have a job.

When you are at the airport, what are your main goals? I want to walk around with my my mum and dad and explore the airport. I do not want to sit down and wait because I have never been here before…. I also really can not wait to get on the flight!

Persona Interview 2

Persona 2, David Green

What is your age? 61.

How would you rate your problem solving skills? In my line of work, I constantly have to deal with problems and decision making. Therefore I would say I have quite sophisticated problem solving skills.

Would you say that you are a patient person? Definitely not. Waiting around and being able to twiddle my thumbs is not a quality I possess.

Are you a punctual person? Yes. I like to make an effort to be early whenever I possibly can. I hate to be left waiting, so I believe it is only fair I do not keep others waiting because of me.

Do you fly frequently? As I am a businessman, I fly domestically very frequently, usually multiple times a week, to visit multiple business partners.

How do you feel about airports? Love them or hate them? I fly frequently, however the lack of efficiency at  the airport makes my experience uncomfortable. There is always a line up and delays are the bane of my existence! Also, when there are delays, there is nothing entertaining provided by the airport, apart from shopping and wasting money, to pass time. They definitely are not my favourite place in the world, though as I fly so frequently I have had to learn to tolerate them.

What level income do you have? Very high. I am a CEO after all...

When you are at the airport, what are your main goals? My first priority is navigating through check in and the security system efficiently. Like I said, I am not patient and I find the airport’s lack of efficiency to be quite unnerving.

Persona Interview 1

Persona 1, Gemma Watson

What is your age? 17.

How would you rate your problem solving skills? I would say I have good problem solving skills. When problems do arise, I can generally find a quick, easy and effective solution.

Would you say that you are a patient person? No. I detest having to wait for anything. Long line ups are literally the worst.

Are you a punctual person? I would say I am rather punctual. I do not make an effort to be super early, but I make sure I am never late.

Do you fly frequently? I fly yearly with my parents to visit my grandparents in Tasmania. So no, I do not fly that frequently.

How do you feel about airports? Love them or hate them? Since I do not like overly crowded spaces, and airports usually are filled with people, I tend to dislike airports. Honestly, airports are too crowded.

What level income do you have? I have a part time job in a small cafe, so my income is quite low right now.

When you are at the airport, what are your main goals? My main goal in the airport is to make sure my phone does not run out of battery before my flight! My phone is my only source of entertainment on flights, and since it is nearly impossible finding a power point in the airport, I absolutely need to use it as little as possible. I guess from that another goal would be finding something to entertain myself before my flight, as well as avoiding getting lost and navigating safely to my boarding gate.

Some Early Research

So, this first one is a neat little article from a few months ago about a restaurant chain putting iPads all around their tables. My group has been throwing around the idea of using boarding passes as a way to quickly identify passengers, and it's nice to see that it's not too far out of an idea (because people are already doing it): http://www.theverge.com/2014/11/20/7254931/how-ipads-are-making-airports-less-miserable-places

The second piece I found is relating to airport security. Up until now my group had mostly been thinking about how to make the airport experience quicker and easier for staff and travellers, but after reading this little document on modern airport security, it got me thinking about how enhancing overall airport security would be great for everyone (even though the passengers might not notice). This document gives a quick overview of modern airport security, which is great for thinking about creative new ways to enhance airport security: www.frost.com/prod/servlet/cio/244644426 (Clicking this link downloads the PDF)

Research - Airport Maps

http://www.guidingtech.com/8329/avoid-getting-lost-airports-bing-airport-maps/
Getting lost in an airport is not an uncommon occurrence - they are quite large areas that are generally unfamiliar unless you are a frequently flier. Because of this Bing has created 'Bing Airport Maps'. They supply maps for 42 airports in America. This type of application is extremely valuable because airport signage can be very difficult to locate - let alone read. Something that you can quickly bring up on your phone to simply find your boarding gates is most valuable.

Research - Art in the Airport

http://www.cntraveler.com/stories/2013-04-02/photos-airports-wtih-art-museums-galleries-new-york-london-paris

There are a number of airports throughout the world that have art showcases throughout them – some of this is aerospace related, and some is not. These temporary or permanent instalments can vary in size and have the ability to appeal to a large age group. Because this is an inexpensive concept, an instalment like this could better the entertainment issue in the Brisbane Airport. The idea would need some fine tuning to become interactive and there would need to be the addition of an innovative twist to fit the brief.

Research - Articles

1.
Article gives an example of a solution to the whole Customs thing by using a phone to submit declarations, information, etc. generally speeds up the process. So instead of having to write it all out, it's all on your phone, submit it and you're good to go

2.
This article looks at all of what's so great about Changi Airport from soundproof rooms to runway views. Neat stuff. It's basically a review of the whole airport by a guy who 'lives' there for just 48 hours to get through everything though I'm not sure that he actually gets around to everything

Research - Baggage Tracking

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QamQbearbdw
Many people can identify with the problem of not being able to find their bags at baggage claim. It can be a very stressful and problematic experience wondering if your luggage is even at the correct airport. Because of this, AT&T had an innovative thought and took the initiative to design an application that allows you to track your luggage as well as set up a flashing light to help spot your luggage in the crowd.
